About The Prius

The first Prius made available outside Japan was released in 2001, and the second-generation Prius was a complete re-design featuring Hybrid Synergy Drive and released in 2004. Worldwide sales reached half a million vehicles in mid 2006.

With current concerns over greenhouse gas emissions and increasing fuel prices, the Prius is a car of the future, featuring low fuel consumption usually below 5L/100km. The Generation II Prius (2004 onwards) is certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) by the California Air Resources Board. This certification means the Prius has near-zero tailpipe emissions and zero evaporative emissions. It is one step cleaner than the previous generation’s Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) certification.

The Generation III Prius released in July 2009 is an evolution of the Gen. II, with a 1.8 Litre petrol engine and re-designed and improved Hybrid system in a similar, but re-designed body. The mechanical upgrades deliver 20% more power, in addition to a 10% improvement in economy over the Gen. II, but even more importantly make the Prius even Greener, with emissions of only 89 g/km of CO2, and an official fuel consumption rating of 3.9 l/100km. Equipment levels in this model are markedly increased….particularly in the I-tech, with Radar-guided Cruise Control; Pre-Collision system; Sunroof with embedded Solar Panels in the roof which power the internal ventilation system while the car is parked; Heads-Up display System; and Intelligent Parking Assist.

The car delivers impressive performance, since it is able to take advantage of the power of both petrol and electric motors when a power boost is called for.

The vehicle is also packed with other advanced features, and Prius owners tend to be people who appreciate good design, advanced technology and who seek to reduce their emissions footprint on the planet.

The Gen 4 Prius released in 2016 has better handling, and better standard equipment levels in the Base model.

Although Toyota has recently discontinued the Prius in Australia, the Club continues to support owners of all Toyota and Lexus hybrid models.
